Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel (1805 – 1847)

Born in Hamburg, Germany

She was the older sister of the composer Felix Mendelssohn.

She practiced very hard to become a great pianist.

Her family did not think that women should perform in public so she only performed in one concert.

Some of her early pieces of music were published under her brother’s name. It was common at this time for women to publish their music under a man’s name.

Her brother would bring his compositions to her and get her suggestions for ways to improve them.
